Artist's Comments

Sorry I haven't posted anything in a while. I wish I considered this one "done", but it's more like I've been painting it for so long I can't tell if I like it or not anymore. :(

Consider this an updated version of the very first character I submitted way back in April 2008. The blue reflected light on the skin was a real pain to get right, but at least I remembered to add fingernails this time! I should really stop painting people being illuminated by weird light sources, it's a real pain! :D Anyway, the clouds on the planet she's holding are taken from NASA photographs, but the surface is all my own, no textures or anything. For the moon, I used the surface of Venus as a starting point to build on. Thanks goes to =DemosthenesVoice for his excellent tutorial [link] on planet making. I've never digitally painted a proper piece of space art before, so that tutorial was really helpful in getting things to look natural.

And also I should thank the Finnish metal band Sonata Arctica for writing the song "My Land" which was what I was listening to when I got the idea to paint this. I'll be happy to answer any other questions you may have, but for now I'm going to sleep :)

They might be a pain, but the strange lighting is one of my favorite parts of your drawings (because I can't do lighting worth a shit). I love her face, particularly around her cheeks and eyes. You put in a lot of really nice subtleties that aren't totally noticeable but give a HUGE positive effect on the realisticness of this drawing. :D

My main suggestion is that you do something more with the belly of her top-shirt/armor (or whatever it is, I'm not totally sure). It just looks too flat and plain. Same with the wings. If you could get just a little texture on them it would really help them out. And the little tails of her head-band also look a little dull. Add a few more wrinkles to them (and, if you feel like it, some stitching). But other than those few things, this is a nice piece. ^^

The glowing of the Earth under her hands reminds me of the cover art for Dio's "Master of the Moon" album [link] (which happens to be done by the artist I most envy lol).

Keep up the great work! :)

Thanks! And yeah, I was running out of ideas for embellishing the armor designs. I can probably come up with something to make that area look a bit more interesting. Hopefully I'll get inspired. Although, generally inspiration hits me on the drive to work (and never on the way back home). I think my brain must enjoy frustrating me. :(

Admittedly, I almost never work with textures, so I'll have to experiment with them and see if I can get some better looking results in the areas you mentioned. The wings could definitely stand some improving (they were certainly frustrating)... and the head-band too. Cloth has never really been my strong suit. Improving those areas is going to be tricky.

And thanks! It's an honor to be even slightly compared to Mark Sasso :D I own the album, but I didn't even think of the similarities when I was painting this.

I really appreciate the critique! I'll try to put what you said to good use :) If I post any changes I will let you know.

I know the feeling! There was a period of a few months last year when I would get a jolt of song inspiration on the way to school (just as I was getting in my car, usually) which meant I would have to try to keep it in my head until I got there or risk trying to frantically get some paper and a pen at a red light (which there are few of on the drive, since it's mostly freeway).

I've found that making a paint brush specifically for a texture is the best way to go. I make brushes all the time and usually never use them more than once or twice. But it's quite worth it. Also, for the cloth, try tampering with some of the filters. Those are what I use when I'm feeling lazy and don't want to actually try adding my own full-blown texture.

I loved his album art so much that I went onto Yahoo answers and asked who the artist was. After getting the name I found his website via Google. I think I cried for like three hours because he was so good. The link has been sitting in my bookmarks since summer, I think. :XD: I envy him SO MUCH~!

Any time! ^^

Thanks, man! And I really appreciate the tip, I'll try that out next time. What I don't know about digital painting could fill a warehouse :D

LOL!! but it´s the same with me. PS has so many possibilites, and all i use are those silly brushes, like a traditional painter. ;)
